Sand & Shells

21 x 24

Anna Chan

First Place Winner

I have always enjoyed the occasional shelling while on vacation for prized seashell but I did never imagine my art would become a combination of treasure hunting and puzzle assembly. Covid lockdown reinvented many careers, mine included. A jewelry designer by profession, I found solace at my local beach in New York when there was little work and lots of creative energy. A year in and my garage is my playground full of sand and seashells. My bas relief sculptures are created using the basic sand castle method, sand mix with water and my two bare hands. It is only when all the seashells have found their place do I seal the piece. I intentionally seek out broken and undesirable seashells to showcase in my work. They are the true gems, every piece with a life story to tell. Together in a mosaic they are a force of nature, nothing ordinary. My work has been featured in numerous publications, notably My Modern Met and I have started showing my work in galleries.

Still LifeWith Redbud And Afternoon Sun

Photography

Martha Nance

Second Place

Martha Nance is a physician in Minnesota whose day-to-day work is somewhat dark. When she is not at work, and when she travels, she seeks out the brightness in small and ordinary things--like the tiny beam of sunlight illuminating a leaf on its way to dazzling her eye! Her nature photographs have been published in The Tiny Seed Journal, The Esthetic Apostle, Wanderlust, The Hopper, and Burningwood Literary Journal, among others.

The dynamic compositions and colors created by nature fascinate him. The ebb and flow of plant growth through the seasons, the art of natural erosion over the centuries, the beautiful chaotic placement of rocks by water and glaciers, the thousands of greens in trees and plants all offer vistas man has yet to create in any design studio.

Derek Entwistle

Honorable Mention

My name is Derek Entwistle and am a proud Australian.

I’m currently living and working in Japan with my wonderful wife and am an avid, and rather prolific, digital photographer.

Japan, with it’s 4 distinct seasons, history and culture, offers a multitude of artistic opportunities. I enjoy trying to capture the beauty of a moment and then post processing the captured image to produce something interesting or intriguing.

I've been fortunate enough to be published in several books and have had images exhibited in several cities around the world including New York, Paris, Sydney and Melbourne.

I love what I do!

Lindsey Morrison Grant

Honorable Mention

The stories of our experience, both comedic and tragic, are all that we leave behind. Whether they evolve into family lore from the retelling, are splashed on broadsheets by journalists, or internalized into a mantra of sorts, they are historical and, in the end, the sum of our lives. As I've learned to lean on my creative right-brain for problem-solving, self-soothing, and insight (allowing the critical left-side to lay fallow) I've found the stories of my life emerge in a diverse array of art forms. Whether poetic verse, poignant prose or surreal self-portrait, they all tend to tell a similar story of a rebellious and complex individual whose treasured legacy may just be buried beneath the assumptive surface. Thank you for providing this opportunity to share this pile of snapshots from that most eclectic journey. Namaste, Lindsey Morrison Grant BIO Self-identifying as a neurodiverse, two-spirit, elder storyteller deeply rooted in The Great Pacific Northwest, Lindsey Morrison Grant attributes success and survival, if not salvation, to a superlative support system, mindfulness practice, and daily creative expression in words, sounds, and images.

Don James

Honorable Mention

I am a creator of abstract photographic images. I find inspiration in natural, industrial, and urban environments, being drawn to subjects that are rarely noticed by others. They are pieces of man-made structures, details of common objects, or short-lived fragments of nature that are continuously sculpted by the elements.
