Anna Chan
First Place Winner
I have always enjoyed the occasional shelling while on vacation for prized seashell but I did never imagine my art would become a combination of treasure hunting and puzzle assembly. Covid lockdown reinvented many careers, mine included. A jewelry designer by profession, I found solace at my local beach in New York when there was little work and lots of creative energy. A year in and my garage is my playground full of sand and seashells. My bas relief sculptures are created using the basic sand castle method, sand mix with water and my two bare hands. It is only when all the seashells have found their place do I seal the piece. I intentionally seek out broken and undesirable seashells to showcase in my work. They are the true gems, every piece with a life story to tell. Together in a mosaic they are a force of nature, nothing ordinary. My work has been featured in numerous publications, notably My Modern Met and I have started showing my work in galleries.
Martha Nance
Second Place
Martha Nance is a physician in Minnesota whose day-to-day work is somewhat dark. When she is not at work, and when she travels, she seeks out the brightness in small and ordinary things--like the tiny beam of sunlight illuminating a leaf on its way to dazzling her eye! Her nature photographs have been published in The Tiny Seed Journal, The Esthetic Apostle, Wanderlust, The Hopper, and Burningwood Literary Journal, among others.
The dynamic compositions and colors created by nature fascinate him. The ebb and flow of plant growth through the seasons, the art of natural erosion over the centuries, the beautiful chaotic placement of rocks by water and glaciers, the thousands of greens in trees and plants all offer vistas man has yet to create in any design studio.
Minnie Lucas
Third Place
Minnie Lucas is a fine art photographer who works with nature, portraiture, and scanned photos. She plays with shapes, lines, and color that she finds while working with nature. All these things, she discovers while hiking in the woods. With portraiture she works with people and animals and enjoys learning about their stories. She scans old photographs and manipulates them in different ways, too. In May 2020, she graduated from Columbus College of Art & Design with a BFA in photography. Currently, she works at Art Recovery Technologies (ART) of Columbus & SE Ohio as an art technician. She lives in the Columbus area in Ohio. Her work has been displayed at Shot Tower Gallery, Zanesville Museum of Art, J. Mane Gallery, and Cox Fine Arts Center.
