Eat

J. Mane Gallery is proud to present our Eat online juried art exhibition.

Food is essential to our survival. It is also one of the great pleasures in life. It's no surprise then that fruit, vegetables, meat, and drink have been common motifs in painting and sculpture from the Roman era until today.

For this competition, artists were encouraged to share their artistic vision and interpretation of food and eating.  The artwork varied from realism to surrealism to abstraction. All artists over the age of 18, regardless of location or experience, were encouraged to submit their best-inspired work.

Each of our themed exhibitions, awards for Best In Show, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards.

The remaining artists included in the exhibition serve as an example of impressive talent and we are honored to showcase their artwork on the J. Mane Gallery website.

We thank all the competition participants. If you are interested in purchasing any of the artwork in this exhibition, please contact the artists directly. J. Mane Gallery does not enter into the selling of artwork featured in any of the monthly online exhibitions. You will find the artist's website or email by clicking on the images below.

Thank you for visiting our website and enjoy the exhibition!

The Fall Line Up, Acrylic, 8 x 24

Lynn Johnson

Lynn began her artistic journey in 1991.  She started her art education with continuing education courses and carried on with seminars and workshops from local and internationally acclaimed artists.    She finds inspiration in the simple things around her.  Things that go from routine to stunning for a moment in time when the light hits a certain way.  Her mission is to capture those moments on canvas.   She works in acrylics, using glazing techniques to achieve depth and luminosity in her pieces.   Her favorite subjects are nature, still life, and water scenes.  She particularly loves painting glass and water as there is limitless potential to create depth through transparency.

Lynn started to exhibit her work in the 1990's with local art groups.    She held a booth in the Dalhousie University juried art/craft show for twelve years.  Simultaneously, she sold her art and art products in a wholesale environment, filling orders to gift shops and museums throughout the Maritimes.    More recently, she has been represented by commercial galleries.  She has had solo shows at various galleries from 2010 – 2022.

She takes on commissioned works as well and enjoys bringing a client’s photo to life whether it be anything from a pet portrait to a family homestead or boat.

Diane Gelman

I am a mixed media artist, layering together images, designs, and fantasy. My artworks showcase the beauty of nature, interesting people, and exciting food. I strive to create works of art that are rich with light, color, and details. I choose expressive subjects to evoke strong emotional connections. I find inspiration everywhere, in shadows, in the way light hits an object, and in colorful displays of delicious baked goods. I start with an idea and let the piece evolve organically from inspiration to a full blown creation. My paintings are improvisations on realistic images fused onto fanciful and imaginative themes. I use additive and reductive processes in creating my work, removing or embellishing images, and often carving into them, to find the real, hidden story underneath each painting.

Uzbek Bread Seller 3, Digital Art, 40 x 30

Andrea Hellman

Andrea Hellman, Ed.D., is an associate professor of English at Missouri State University. She studied studio art at the School of the Worcester Art Museum with masters of painting and printmaking like Tom Lewis, Sally Bishop, and Ella Delyanis. She holds a doctorate in Language, Literacy, and Cultural Studies from Boston University. She is best known for her publications in TESOL and directs a National Professional Development grant project called Show Me Multiliteracy (multiliteracy.net). Andrea is a prolific fine artist, who maintains an online gallery of her works (https://www.andreahellman.com/). Her preferred medium is digital painting although she has worked in oil painting, watercolor, etching, collage, mixed media, and photography. The artworks that Andrea selected for Eat! were inspired by her 2023 summer trip to Uzbekistan to train English teachers. She was thrilled to spend five weeks immersed in the mythical and artistic Uzbek culture, where bread is revered and where breadmaking is an art form. Each baker punctures their unique bread with their own bread stamps to give this food its recognizable embroidery-like design. Bakers line the markets and streets with their hot loaves wrapped in thick blankets so that everyone can eat the freshest, most delectable bread every day. The artworks feature patterns that are Andrea's own but which are reconfigurations of traditional Uzbek tile work, textiles, and embroidery. The bread images are preserved as the original (albeit non-copyrighted) art of each baker.
